The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has issued an arrest warrant for a Georgia man who is accused of “misdirecting” US$30 million (about C$39.9 million) in donations to send Bibles to China.
“Guy saved millions of people from getting bothered by preachy Christians and their insane fanfic”.
He collected donations from the gullible to spread harmful fiction about an imaginary deity. We should let him keep it and let the imaginary deity enact the punishment.
How is this any different than any church in history?
He misdirected the funds from one grift to another. Big no no, you have to use them for the Original Grift.
Instead of creating the religious material, Shenk apparently used the money for his own purposes. The DOJ claimed Shenk spent about $1 million on online gambling sites, purchased $4 million in life insurance policies in various people’s names and spent nearly $1 million on diamonds, gold, and other precious metals.
Authorities have yet to locate Shenk.
Heads up dude if you’re on Lemmy go into hiding
With that kind of money Shenk is...
It is impossible for this dude to lack the means to hide anywhere that wouldn’t extradite him after stealing 40 million dollars.
While it’s sad that he managed to steal and scam people out of so much money; it literally was given to him!
It should go without saying that one should never simply give to just any charity without at least verifying that the charity actually is doing something related to their stated mission.
It should also ping on the radar of people that China is not open to the free exchange of ideas, and that sending people with crates of Chinese Bibles to China might actually be dangerous and stupid They haven’t been open-minded since the CCP took over in Beijing.
Run, Shenk, Ruuuun!
