Highlights: On Tuesday, the NHL reversed a ban on using Pride Tape — rainbow-striped hockey tape — and other shows of LGBTQ+ support on the ice. “After consultation with the NHL Players Association and the NHL Player Inclusion Coalition, players will now have the option to voluntarily represent social causes with their stick tape throughout the season,” said the league in a statement.
The ban had been put in place over the summer, along with outlawing special jerseys. However on Saturday, Arizona Coyotes’ Travis Dermott used Pride Tape to specifically protest the ban.
Yay! I was really upset that the only sport I enjoy watching had chosen to go backwards to such a bullshit hateful policy, very happy to hear they reversed the decision. Good on Travis Dermott for protesting this, way too many players didn’t give a shit!
Same, I chose not to watch until this was lifted. Now I’ll tentatively start watching and attending games of my local team again.
LGB!
Of course they didn’t, because hockey players can’t stop being bigoted fucks while also raping their teammates.
Or is that just the Blackhawks organization?
The NHL forgot 70% of their players are under the age of 30 when they made the policy. Of course there’d be players forcing the issue.
Most are Canadian, many are Swedish and Finnish and American… but some are Russian, and it was largely Russian players that protested the pride warmup jerseys.
Hokey players can have a little gay… as a treat.
