Prisoners say the stalls are often filthy, with feces, urine, black mold and mice; one man said he got a near fatal infection while detained in a stall.
Why couldn’t we just make conditions decent enough for them to tolerate their stay and launch education and schooling career choices to encourage them getting back into the society once they have done their time and then having a chance to start earning money in lawful ways…
Instead of torturing them all and leaving them in their filth when they are not tortured…
In the private prison nation, recivism means repeat customers. Prisons are legal slavery and lots of laws post slavery are just excuses to round up mostly black people and put them to work
Some places do. And while I don’t know if it has better outcomes in the end, it does translate into a calmer stay, for everyone! I used to watch MSNBC Lockup, and one of the wardens, a woman, ran her prison this way, with many perks rather than hard time. Less altercations was meaningful.

How big portion of prisoners are black people, generally?
According to this https://www.bop.gov/about/statistics/statistics_inmate_race.jsp roughly 38% of the inmate population is black. According to the US 2020 census black people are roughly 12% of the population.
Well, that’s not very tough on crime. Medieval is the goal, I guess.
Because it’s a capitalistic run criminal organization and they need their criminals to come back

It’s another one of those things the Scandinavian nations seem to whip our asses at.

Overall quality of life is another, IIRC.
