I bought a media management and consumption platform running on my own server using my own clients. For what reason do I need a relay service to watch content in my house on my server?

So what is the move for them?
Plex has a two-pronged VOD service. They have ad-supported “live television” and they have content to rent.
I don’t know if that’s enough to sustain them but I don’t really care. I’ve been a PlexPass owner for over ten years. I have only asked that they resolve bugs and made requests for things like proper organization of classical music (which they’ve explicitly stated they will not consider).
You do bring to light something I hadn’t considered; that they see Plex as a business model. From my perspective, I want to buy a fully developed product with the expectation of bug fixes and security patches etc over time. I genuinely can not think of a single thing the developers have added to the service that I’ve used in the past ten years.
So, what kind of business model charges money to do things that don’t have an apparent impact on the user experience?
Plex has been one of my most used applications in the past decade. However, it has its limitations and they are actively imposing more limitations on the experience in favor of “a sustainable business model”.
The issue is that their sustainable business model is interrupting the users’ sustained use of a platform they’ve already paid for. I’ve had to go through all of my devices and disable all auto-updates to ensure I do not get the “New Plex Experience”.
What we should be asking is why “selling a product” is no longer a business model.

You’re genuinely better off avoiding the internet entirely if your intent is to go about your life waiting on people to give you the answers to questions to topics you evidently do not care about.
oxjox@lemmy.mlto World News@lemmy.ml•Global oil prices soar after Israel attacks IranEnglish355·21 days agoThe laziness of the average person continues to amaze me. You’ve chosen to ask and wait for the answer to a question which could have been answered by reading the article you’ve commented on. “Why” is the reason journalists pen these articles.
Another longtime user here. If you haven’t already, you might want to disable autoupdates on all your devices. The “new experience” is not without its controversies.
C1 adds its own preview to the file based on the camera it detects in the exif data - it’s a feature, not a bug.
Select Linear Curve in Base Characteristics > Curve. I don’t believe this is to be a true RAW interpretation but it’s closer.
How are you viewing the RAW file?

It was the “gold standard”. Now, I can’t imagine anyone saying to their kid, “you can be anything you want one day, even the president”. The office of the president is a joke.
Even if someone I were to fully support became president, everything is fucked now. The country is so polarized that there’s just a winning team and a losing team. There is no president who can bring everyone together and make things “great again”. No matter what a president does, the media and the citizens of the internet are going to twist reality to make all actions and statements support their narrative. I don’t see a way out of it.
oxjox@lemmy.mlto Politics@beehaw.org•Trump Argues With ABC’s Terry Moran About Photoshopped Image: ‘He Had MS-13 On His Knuckles Tattooed!’English11·2 months agoHere’s an example of how I perceived something incorrectly based on social media.
All the posts I saw were about how “MS13” was photoshopped on his hand - as if to suggest they were actual tattoos.
Apparently, what I’ve only just now inferred from watching this video, the overlayed text shown in the photo is a label for each of the real tattoos.
So, on one hand (no pun intended), you have a story about Trump believing photoshopped letters are real tattoos and on the other hand you have a story about whether the interpretation of the tattoos is correct to be MS13 related.
This reporter did a shit job. Trump offered to get the picture out and he blew the chance to get the facts straight on this hot topic - do you believe the letters “MS13” are actually tattooed on his hand or are you saying they’re the interpretation of the tattoos below them.
EDIT: rewatching the video and caught the moron saying “he had MS as clear as you can be. Not interpreted.” I mean… ya know, I honestly worry that we will ever come out of this in a good shape. Will we ever again have respect for the office of the presidency? Can we ever again elect someone who represents the best of us?

oxjox@lemmy.mlOPto World News@lemmy.ml•The Truth About Trump’s Greenland CampaignEnglish18·3 months agoI don’t know how much weight I put into this piece, given that we’re talking about Trump, but I appreciate the perspective. From my understanding, the US has always had a good relationship with Greenland and could have easily worked with them to increase defenses and security. There could certainly be another objective like mining natural resources or, I dunno, building crypto mining facilities. The whole thing should be offensive to all Americans, especially conservatives.
You’re right. This is what’s being described as humiliation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWZU4zrOoLE
The headline is riding the popular sentiment regarding this particular clip without discussing it much at all.
I’ve read variations of this click bait headline from dozens of sources.
One would have to have a sense of humility in order to be humiliated.
The headline should read: Unsurprisingly, Trump rejects the truth in favor of the lies that keep him in power.
You have two light sources of different colors.
Diffuse your light source and block ambient light. This is best achieved, in part, by increasing your shutter speed and using a strobe. Without the strobe, you should get a black image. Adding a diffused strobe would minimize specular highlights. I also find it helpful to use props (plates) that don’t reflect light as much. Speaking of props, the table looks like it’s from an office lunch room. The camera is at an awkward angle.
You’re not totally parallel with the table and the carrots aren’t perfectly perpendicular. Always nice to get it perfect in the shot but this should be fixable in post.Carrots are raw.
I’m not sure if you want to cook them, maybe just blanch them for a minute then cool in ice water so they at least look appetizing. Blanching would bring out more color too. That might seem like a lot but it’s really not. I mean, you gotta make do with what you have so ignore the comments about props. Work on composition and lighting and, if you’re shooting food, make it look edible. If you don’t have a diffuser or strobe, your first step should be blocking that ambient light. You want a large black surface facing the carrots from the bottom left. To diffuse light, you can try covering your light source with a piece of parchment or tracing paper or a white sheet.
This is actually a great submission and easy place to get started. Not too complex. Should be easily improved upon.
Edit: I will say, after looking again at the tiny thumbnail version of this, the lighting looks interesting. It almost looks painted with light. It’s not until you look at the full size photo that you can spot the inconsistencies.
oxjox@lemmy.mlto World News@lemmy.ml•Trump says NATO members should spend 5% of GDP on defenceEnglish12·5 months agoNone of the alliance members, including the US, currently spends 5% of GDP on defence, according to NATO figures. Poland is the highest spender in GDP terms at 4.12%, followed by Estonia at 3.43% and the United States at 3.38%.
I’d like to see people respond to a headline that reads, “Trump demands US increase NATO funding”.
This is not Microsoft. I haven’t updated my plex software in over six months and it runs fine. Still, yes, I would expect updates to any software I purchase as new patches are needed for OS updates, etc. That shouldn’t be more than two updates a year for a given OS - if at all.
Selling a product, generating revenue, using revenue to improve products or create new products is how we used to run businesses.
If they’re unable to maintain software updates with the revenue they get, then they should discontinue support of less popular products.
As I’ve stated on the plex forum, plex is no longer a media management and consumption platform. It’s a video on demand service. That’s their prerogative and that’s fine. The issue is that they’re discontinuing a product that people have purchased and use on a regular basis. I paid money for a product and that product can no longer be used if I change the device I use that product on. They should have left the existing product alone and released something wholly new.
