I think the issue is that most people live in cities, where populations tend to me more diverse. Then most polls probably also end up disproportionately asking cityfolk. So the polls ask people who live in areas with disproportionate numbers of immigrants (relative to non-urban parts of the country), and they forget how many non-immigrants are outside the cities.

Eating a room sounds expensive. Not just in terms of the materials required, but also paying for the aftermath.

There are a lot more poor people than there are rich people. It’s a game of numbers, and a slight increase on the middle class would often bring in more money than a substantial increase on the top percent.

Rich people also have a lot more loopholes they can abuse to pay less in taxes. Closing these loopholes could also potentially/occasionally disproportionately hurt lower or middle class people. They are possible to close, but (A) there’s always more to find, and (B) lobbying means there could be political incentives to not close them.

There’s also the arguments about raising taxes leading to innovation stagnating, or rich people moving to countries with lower tax rates. I’m not sure how much I buy those arguments.

That said, I’m not condoning these. In my country, I think we need to introduce more tax brackets. A doctor making less than $300,000/yr shouldn’t be in the same tax bracket as a CEO making an over $800,000/yr salary before bonuses. But they are in the same tax bracket. That doesn’t feel right to me.

I recently had someone explain to me what “And that’s where I came in” meant.

I expect to explain to people why we say “roll down the window”, or what the save icon is, lol

I remember on Reddit, during the height of astroturfing and such during the pandemic, people would post stupid shit and block anyone who called them out for spreading misinformation.

At first I thought it was just people who had stupid ideas and didn’t want to change their minds, until I started seeing some of them saying things like “You know I’m right, which is why you won’t reply to this”…and the original commenter would never see it.

It was an effective tool for people who wanted to try to control narratives or otherwise spread misinformation.

There is no “on time”. There is only “early” and “late”! Haha

(And late doesn’t count in elections!)

I definitely agree with businesses doing right by their employees. I just wish the governments would be doing more to protect ALL employees. I vote based on which parties are looking out for everyone, not based on whatever works best for me because I’ve got better than the legal minimum.
