  • A full hour, wow. I expect we’ll get closer looks at Metroid Prime 4 and Splatoon Raiders, as those are the two biggest upcoming titles. Kirby Air Riders just got a mini Direct, so it probably won’t be a focus.

Scratching my head trying to think of what unannounced IPs to expect. No Mario platformers since we just had Bananza and Wonder, but maybe a sports title or some other spinoff, also maybe Kart DLC. The next Zelda won’t be for a while, maybe they’ll tease it but if so it won’t be more than a tease. Maybe a mainline Kirby, but maybe they’re too focused on Air Riders. Fire Emblem seems likely, we’re right about due. Animal Crossing is certainly possible. Maybe Yoshi?

I want to say Rhythm Heaven as my wildcard pick, but that already did get confirmed so I don’t even know what else I want. F-Zero and Panel de Pon would be my dream games but I know they’re absolutely not happening.

  • Those checks were designed to beat cartridge copiers, not emulators. Even the most inaccurate emulators from back in the day didn’t set off those checks.

There was no special chip on the cartridge either, not sure where you heard that from. What it did was check that the console is the correct region, that SRAM is the correct size (8kb, copiers would have more but emulators would get it right), and then checksum parts of the ROM to confirm it wasn’t tampered with.

  • Tried out the demo for Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter. Not sure how I feel about the two combat systems, feels like I really don’t want to go into turn-based mode because I’ll take a lot of damage, but it also feels like the game really wants me to go into turn-based mode in order to deal damage. There’s definitely a lot going on with its mechanics that I haven’t scratched the surface of, but if I buy the game I don’t know if I’ll even make time for another long JRPG…

Also let myself get hooked on Dr. Mario 64 again. Bit rusty, but I managed to 1cc Hard. S-Hard is next.

  • I’m all in favor of shortening copyright length, but it shouldn’t be tied to a creator’s lifespan. It’s too variable, and it doesn’t make sense for anything that more than one person worked on.

I think a reasonable compromise would be 20 years default, after which point you could apply for a 5 year extension twice. Extensions will only be granted if the work is still being made accessible, either new physical copies are being printed or digital distribution is available.

But I would also include a clause that if a work is no longer accessible, such as being pulled from streaming services, an online game being shut down, software not updated to be compatible with modern platforms, etc, copyright is considered to be in a weaker state where end users are permitted to pirate it for noncommercial purposes.

  • I’m very intrigued by the Stadium overhaul, since I always felt it was kind of anticlimactic to just end on a single round of Target Flight. My wish was for a best-of-N set, but this is an interesting approach. You get some agency to pick something fun and avoid duds, and the mindgame sounds very cool. It’s a good way to handle going up to 16 players now, just split them up and allow four winners.

Though my immediate thought is that it would be even more interesting if the four winners from each Stadium then advance to one more grand finals. Make it a bracket!
