I counted backwards once and figured out I was conceived the same month as my parents’ anniversary. I thought I might’ve been the result of their anniversary trip to Jamaica, and for some reason that made me uncomfortable knowing that. A few years later they were talking about the trip and that they didn’t know my mom was pregnant at the time. So thinking more it made sense that I was actually probably from a week or two beforehand, but then that means mom was drinking while pregnant because she didn’t know (although I’m assuming that early doesn’t have much impact).

The first Austin Powers movie, watched it with my mom when I was, like, 14. Super awkward at that age with all the sex jokes. We never spoke of it again.

When we were helping my parents move earlier this year we found the desktop encyclopedia that came with my original copy of the game!

I had a friend from college (female) who had some guy with the same name in Atlanta constantly using her email to sign up for things, like gym membership, dating sites, utility bills, etc. This went on for a decade at least. She even tried calling some of the companies to try and get his phone number. I’m not sure how she ever got it to stop.

I found some at Costco once, and they’re more comfortable than a normal T-shirt. Only seen them the one time, though.

My dad’s uncle had built a truck up like the original one by the mid ’90s. He had a farm along a river, including land on an island in the river, and could ford the river in his truck to reach the island (he could do the same in a tractor).

Question I’ve been meaning to ask: if I start with cloud can I move to self-hosted later? I’ve seen this before and it feels like a product I could make good use of, especially for getting tabs closed.

My two complaints about Peacock were:

1. Even taking the raw World feed there were often still segments cut out which I assume is where they ran ads. Watching replays with the “ad-free” plan there were no ads there, but the content was still gone.

2. Even though the entirety of the events were produced in 4K/UHD, only HD content was available. I understand that they did this because none of their broadcast facilities run in UHD yet and I guess they don’t have their streaming apps supporting it yet, but it’s definitely time for that to be supported. Claiming they don’t need to go UHD because their affiliates aren’t using ATSC 3.0 yet is patently false; the signal is live in my market and dozens of others as well.

That definitely needs to be fixed by Los Angeles, and really should be by Milano Cortina.

Parmigiano Reggiano is a protected name like champagne is. To have the name it has to be produced with traditional methods and sourced from the traditional region, all of which is legally defined. They charge a premium for this, and some of it becomes quite expensive.

I’ve read that in Parma the cheese is so valuable they essentially have banks that hold the cheese for people. I’m almost wondering if this cheese was her payment for the marketing gig.

Offhand I can only think of one movie (and sequels) where “didn’t read the book” made the movie significantly better: The Bourne Identity. Those books really were awful!

I haven’t done any programming in over 20 years, but I think I can make a contribution to projects by trying to improve documentation, once I start using some projects

I remember when Firefox was brand new over 20 years ago and one of the reasons for creating it was the main Mozilla browser had too much feature bloat so it was stripped down to just a browser and if you wanted more features you could add them in as extensions, putting just what you wanted in the browser and leaving out what you didn’t. It was great! Eventually Firefox became more popular so Mozilla switched their efforts to it and they’ve been jamming more things that used to be extensions in as features and bloating it full of features I don’t want. It’s one of the reasons I started using Chrome in the early days of Chrome but then of course that and Google started getting worse so I switched back to Firefox, but it still has its problems.

I think the people who make those claims are usually referring to vinyl records, not cassettes. That said, I would not be surprised if the people who claim they can hear a difference are mostly imagining it. Or perhaps it’s something that dates back to the early days of CDs when the equipment and mastering techniques were not as good as they became later in the ’90s/’00s, not something applicable today.

Just a minor addendum, 44.1 kHz wasn’t really ideal for human hearing; it’s not quite double the highest audible frequency for a lot of humans. The frequency was chosen for audio CDs because the data was recorded onto U-Matic video cassette tapes for duplication (if you watched the tapes back connected to a TV it looks like a black and white checkerboard but the squares switch rapidly and randomly) and 44.1 kHz was the most that could reliably fit on the tape. It worked well enough since most of the sounds recorded are under 22 kHz, but it’s a contributor of why some people say CD audio isn’t as good as a high-quality analog recording. A lot of non-CD digital audio like the audio for digital video or higher resolution digital audio prefers 48 kHz or a multiple of that, like 96 or 192 kHz.

Yes, I just didn’t realize that auto-renew doesn’t work with PayPal on NameCheap and had lazily set it up with PayPal when I got it because I didn’t want to go get my wallet. Lesson learned!
