Terrorism is actually a pretty simple but specific definition. Terrorists use unlawful violence and threats of violence to influence the government or an international governmental organisation, or to intimidate the public. They do this in pursuit of a political, religious, racial or ideological cause.

It doesn’t take much money or many resources to engage in violence or even make threats. Certainly having money and resources at your disposal make you more effective but it’s a rather low but still specific bar to cross to be considered a terrorist.

It took me less than a minute to find that government using a patent is just baked into the patent system. There’s not additional law around it. So it might be better to go the WD 40 route and never actually file a patent to the formula to avoid sharing the formula publicly.

The best definition we have for terrorism is the threat or use of illegal violence to influence the people beyond the immediate area of the attack to achieve a political, religious, ideological or monetary goal.

It’s not necessarily making a moral judgement about terrorism, just how it works. Al Qaeda is a terrorist organization because they used violence and threatened more with the goal of influencing US foreign policy on the basis of Fundamentalist Islamic theology. The IRA were also terrorists for their use and threats of violence with the political goal of unifying Ireland as one nation and taking it back from the British monarchy. Even the Founding Father’s of the US could be considered terrorists by this definition. They destroyed property and killed British citizens in our bid for independence affecting the decisions of the monarchy and parliament an entire ocean away.

Within the Catholic Church there are a few orders of clergy dedicated to scientific discovery, especially the Jesuits.

Granted a lot of them conducted science under the broad philosophy of better understanding the universe God created, but if the end result eventually improves the lives of people, I don’t see how that’s an inherently bad thing.

If we wanted to be a bit more accurate to the hustoru of the real world, religious fundamentalism is opposed to science.

So conventional models describe electricity as flowing through the wires at the speed of light, (this model is extremely useful but doesn’t accurately describe the underlying mechanism) so it makes sense that it would take 16 years in the aphla centauri example (8 years there and 8 years back) for the information that the switch is closed to reach the lightbulb, and that is what happens irl. The full voltage does take that much time to travel the distance BUT because electricity and moving electrons is more complicated and is carried by the electric fields, some of that electric field reaches across the gap and puts a tiny voltage across the lightbulb, which in his example immediately turns on to full brightness at any voltage difference.

Yeah, basically Derek didn’t unpack his definitions very well at the beginning and led to a lot of confusion and incorrect assumptions by others, but at least 3 other channels did replicate the experiment and did find the slight voltage jump across the wires faster than the full voltage along the wire.
