This is such an incredibly dumb idea. If this “storage method” was to gain any traction, Google would figure out how to shut it down, either by banning accounts (removing all your data) or worse, instituting a policy of removing videos that don’t reach a certain view threshold. Not to mention, encoding data this way is inefficient as hell.

Just pay a few dollars for reliable storage, whether from Google or Proton or whoever you like.

Funny enough, a number of years ago a giant 4chan archive surfaced which included a lot of the very first SCP posts that had been lost. It actually confirmed that 173 was posted after Blink aired, meaning it was almost certainly inspired by the episode. Not that it makes the SCP worse, but it’s some interesting lore.

They don’t really need to associate it with a specific person (although I’m sure they’d love to)- they can get plenty of data just within the context of what a single person buys in their store.

Men experience the world very differently from women, particularly when it comes to social interactions. Just because YOU haven’t had too much of a problem with this patient doesn’t mean that your female coworkers have experienced the same thing.

In theory, StarLink would have been faster because they use many low-orbit satellites as opposed to a handful of further-away geostationary satellites like HughesNet. But “faster speeds” isn’t everything and this money is meant to expand actual broadband/optical internet.

Maybe if it was designed to look like a book or something, you could argue it has legitimate uses for home surveillance. But towel hooks are almost exclusively found in bathrooms.

Now, maybe I’m making assumptions here, but I don’t think most people keep valuables in their bathrooms, so that leaves exactly one use case this could have, and it’s not home protection.

I’m currently in engineering undergrad and this looks like it’ll be a lifesaver. Wolfram Alpha can do some pretty good work with units sometimes. But a lot of the time it’ll do weird stuff like refuse to interpret “V” as “volt”, so you have to type out the full name of every single unit. This language should handle that a million times better.

The number is displayed on the instance the post is on, so it doesn’t matter which instance you view it from (or if you’re not logged in at all), the number is calculated from the active users who are members of the instance you’re viewing.

How many tabs do you have open? I have quite a few and it can cause battery to drop a lot. It also occasionally starts using a lot of battery in the background for no apparent reason, which is fixed by just force-quitting the app.

It could also just be that Firefox is inherently more energy intensive than a Lemmy client. Browsers have to handle a lot of stuff to render web pages, while clients for sites just have to send some API calls. I might try using another browser for a few days and see if the battery usage is comparable to Firefox.
