Empricorn@feddit.nlto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is it morally wrong for an immigrant or naturalized citizen to "keep a low profile" and avoid speaking up against the government in order to minimize the risks of denaturalization/deportation?English81·9 days agoI’m not saying it’s a “stupid question”, but I don’t understand it. How and why could it possibly be considered “wrong” or even a moral issue at all to keep a low profile?? Saying/doing nothing is our natural state, no one can say it’s bad to just neutrally exist! Don’t let anyone tell you you have to speak up, especially if it endangers or harms yourself or your friends and family.
If you’re referring to the current US administration, they’re not acting lawfully and are currently trying to arrest or deport legally-protected people and even citizens! You don’t owe them or anyone else anything, certainly not at the expense of you or your family! When you’re acting defensively and protecting yourself, it’s not immoral. This is how hostile to immigrants we’ve become that you are even asking this question… ☹️
TL;DR: Absolutely not. You do you, and be safe!

You’re not bothering them!

Hey Don, careful! You got some whistle in your dog! We all know why your biggest complaint is his looks. If he was as white as us and named John Smith, you wouldn’t say a word about his strong support for workers or belief in the social safety net.

Reducing it like that is basically saying “let the toddlers have fun with their Nintendos!” It’s literally condescending to everyone and comes across as out-of-touch.

These cowards are illegally shooting less lethal rounds at protestors who are exercising their constitutionally-protected right to Free Speech! Or, at least we’re supposed to be protecting them…

The “correction” was simply me clarifying my own experience. But that image is genuinely amusing. I’ve driven through so many towns that look exactly like it!
Empricorn@feddit.nlto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•WTF is a rural town in the USA?English1·1 month agoRural towns. And yes, that’s what I’ve experienced.
Empricorn@feddit.nlto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•WTF is a rural town in the USA?English12·1 month agoI’ll give you the *second image. Like I said, I only spent a couple minutes finding them. But the *first is absolutely typical, in my experience. In small rural towns, the “downtown” is concentrated like this (maybe with 1 fewer floor, and narrower roads). I’ve seen this exact scene in multiple smaller towns, literally all over the US…

You need to meet and surround yourself with less horrible people.
Empricorn@feddit.nlto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do people care so much that their friend or family member’s partner is attractive and not just loving?English231·1 month agoHonesty is telling the truth to people. Openness is feeling free to express yourself. Empathy is considering other people’s perspectives and taking their feelings into account. People should practice the last one before impulsively acting based on the first 2. It’s called being an adult member of society.

Apparently, the dopamine rush of telling someone about your project, you going back to school, you getting healthy, improving yourself, etc is so strong it’s basically pre-rewarding you for it. The result is scientifically-documented drops in people following-through and achieving their goals… You want to succeed? Don’t tell anyone until you’re already almost there!
