If we Americans don’t find ways to recognize our shared values, and even our shared humanity, we won’t be able to defend those values when they are challenged.

This is a very important article. When talking to someone on the other side first find common ground. When having a conversation with someone both you and the other person must listen to and respect each other. Finding common ground before talking about your differences can be a great way to help achieve that.
