    Italian derives from vulgar Florentine(in a “nobilised” form created by Dante Alighieri), while Sardinian is a different language descending directly from Latin. It’s not really mutually intelligible with Italian.

    One of the two main variants of the language, the Campidanese(southern) one, is actually somewhat mutually intelligible with Spanish, as a result of the Spanish domination(probably).
