While an endless military operation allows the prime minister to cling to power, it also fulfills a larger ideological goal: preventing Palestinian statehood.
Why would he? Instability in the West Bank is an asset to him. As long as Hamas exists, the Israelis have an excuse not to negotiate with Palestinians.
I’d assume the only solution for the Palestinians (at least most of them) is for Israel to cease to exist completely. That’s impossible considering how strong Israel is militarily.
As long as those guys exist, Israel will continue to see them as a threat, and therefore try to eradicate them.
This is why the two sides refuse any kinds of negotiations, which leads to increasing amounts of sadness.
