  • I don’t think there is any “brigading” going on here… Just to be clear what brigading actually is:

On reddit, there was a time when there were coordinated and organised efforts to “invade” another communities. For example, there were threads on 4Chan where users linked to subreddits or posts with the aim of having a bunch of users post similar stuff at the same time.

There was also brigading within reddit when one sub would make a post where they coordinate users to post specific comments in specific threads or post similar stuff in a specific subreddit.

As far as I can tell, that’s not what is happening here… There is no coordinated group effort here, it’s just that the vast majority of users on lemmy are not conservatives.

  • It’s incredibly how fast conservatives seem to give up on even attempting to make an argument… As soon as your views are slightly challenged, you default to a “LOL, you are crazy” mindset…

Despite some accusations, Trump’s kids were never legally challenged in the way Hunter Biden is/was, despite multiple accusations and them being much more directly involved into their Father’s political actions…

I don’t get it, Biden is already a pretty big joke of a president. There are so many angles where you can constructively criticize Biden and get people, even from the left, to agree. But you don’t do that, instead you go after his kids because you somehow have to equate his actions with Trump’s actions and somehow justify Trump’s actions.

  • kind of ironic really - BLM protests were a big thing in my area,

Not really ironic at all… More like one has nothing to do with the other… The_Donald was already quaranteened in 2019. So why are you changing the subject?

protests that quickly turned into anit-police riots

You mean anti-protester beatdowns caused by a few bad apples?

    all swept under the rug

All swept under the rug? The site was full with videos of people rioting and/or getting gassed/beaten by police…

these actions were widely lauded on reddit & had quite a lot of support in the media.

The murder of Floyd was mostly condemned on reddit, but that was the case everywhere… That’s not the same thing as people calling for riots… People who directly called for violence were banned, this included left wingers…

Acab is not a call for violence. “Defund the police” is not a call to violence…

Even before 2020 there were some on reddit calling for violence against the far-right. Reddit threatened to ban communities that did not remove those comments and banned users/communities who spread those comments.

now the metro area is crime-ridden shithole, and just about everyone I know does WFH so they dont have to visit that hive of scum and villainy.

What has any of that have to do with what we are talking about?

  • No, calling for harming people is not normal speech. The_donald did repeatedly and openly disregard the rules in regards of brigading, calls for violence, etc…

Just because you automatically reply to any accusation of hate speech or calls for violence with “not everyone who disagrees is doing hate speech” doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist… And reddit also banned left wing communities that disregarded rules.

Reddit really didn’t want to get rid of them, they generated a lot of traffic, but they routinely caused bad press and caused trouble with advertisers. If I remember correctly, the last straw was calls to violence of police officers.

  • Everyone has an ideology, whether you realize or acknowledge it or not. That doesn’t mean that everyone who subscribes to the same ideology has the same views on everything.

People who consider themselves conservatives do exist, whether we like it or not. I much prefer them to be forced to be confronted with other views and opinions every now and then that challenge their worldview.

Otherwise, they will go to some echochamber hosted by right wingers. This has already happened to the point where they basically live in a parallel universe and self-isolate. I don’t think it’s in anybody’s interest for us to also encourage this self-isolation…
