There’s a lot of misguided people out there who would vote for Trump if he was on a ballot but would not start a civil war if he was not.
I feel like it’s true to say that we are the closest we’ve been to a civil war since the last, but that doesn’t mean that the risk of civil war is high.
Disqualifying a candidate is the intended legal protection. Unfortunately, I’m not sure that will ever be used effectively if it’s not done to Trump.
Definitely ironic to me that there’s so much fear about EV batteries spontaneously combusting. And in the end, one of the largest recalls for spontaneous combustion is from an oil regulator in an ICEV 😅
Yes, posts and comments are upvoteable even even not subscribed to their community. Subscribing only affects what content you see when you filter your feed to “subscribed”.
Not sure if this counts as a feature, but; more expensive base hardware, less expensive peripherals. I’d legitimately pay like $400 for a top of the line handheld system as long as I could buy a second pair of controllers for less than $50.
I legitimately haven’t touched my Switch in like 3 years because of controller drift, and I just can’t bring myself to pay $80 for something that seems like it should cost $40. So my PS5 and XSX have pulled my attention away completely.
TotK nearly convinced me to jump back in, but I ultimately decided against it since it didn’t seem worth $150 to resume playing the Switch.
“Prevention” perhaps in the way of amputating a broken arm. If we apply the exact same scenario of the e-mail/Gmail to the Fediverse / Threads, we’re talking about a loss of (or lack of) some functions, but the foundational connection will still remain. Meta can dangle carrots with their bells and whistles, but the people who want to be on a non-corporate instance will remain here. We can still receive content & comments, and we can proselytize the benefits of a non-corporate Fediverse while still offering the same content & comments.
How is that different from defederating now?
In the Embrace, Extend, Extinguish scenario, assuming they get to “Extinguish”, the rest of the Fediverse becomes isolated and cannot connect with their friends and content.
If we defederate now, the Fediverse becomes isolated and cannot connect with Threads content, and cannot connect with friends who choose to be on Threads instead of a disconnected alternative.
So far I’ve only got a lot of unsatisfying answers (from a factual perspective). It seems to boil down to how much individuals on the fediverse fear Meta is in their capability of doing a full take-over. Personally, I feel like we’re pretty protected form that. I’ve posted my questions, and still looking for some good answers here:
As far as I understand;
A user is specific to one instance. In order to interact with the fediverse on that specific account, they need to log into that instance. If they’re banned from that instance, they cannot log in and interact with the rest of the fediverse.
There’s nothing stopping them from logging into an alt, whether on that same instance or on another instance.
