That would be a big strategic break from full spectrum dominance, which is US policy, and part of the plan to contain the growth of China.

Starbucks corporate executives are angry about it.29·2 months agoCoffee culture in China is on another level. They have fast coffee like Luckin, Cotti, and dozens more brands, all of which are better and have more variety than Starbucks, and they have high end coffees with artisan beans, and all of them are cheaper than Starbucks. They’re not going to win there, for sure.

Bartsbigbugbag@lemmy.mlto Politics@beehaw.org•Judge rules Trump use of Alien Enemies Act for gangs is ‘unlawful’1·2 months agoOh I agree that we should not be moving to strip these people of given rights, don’t get me wrong, but enfranchisement has historically been a privilege. Part of the movement towards justice has been extending that privilege to more and more people, and that seems to have positive effects on the society as a whole, but it seems metaphysical to imply that it is not something granted by the state under a nation state framework.
I’m for reeducation and re-entry into society for all but the most unredeemable, and I don’t think, as horrific as they are, most trumpers are unredeemable. We’ve seen even those most enthused and unrepentant tools of empire redeemed, such as Japanese soldiers who returned from imprisonment by the Chinese after the war to become staunch anti imperialists for the rest of their lives. Very few are incapable of growth, no matter how stunted their development may be. I don’t necessarily think fascists should be allowed to vote until they have repented their fascist views, but I also don’t think I have enough right to make that decision myself.
Bartsbigbugbag@lemmy.mlto Politics@beehaw.org•Judge rules Trump use of Alien Enemies Act for gangs is ‘unlawful’1·2 months agoIn fact it is. We don’t get to participate in the vast majority of our governance already. Now you could argue that a society should afford full democratic rights to all of its citizens, but that is not the system we’re living in. Even in the areas where we’re allowed to participate, we have exceptions that bar many millions of people from participating, including but not limited to prisoners and in most places ex cons.?

I had one around when Miles Morales first came out and it was so bad I thought my tv was broken, and Samsung agreed and sent a guy to replace the panel. The new panel did the same thing though, and at that point I just sold it and bought an OLED.

Oh who am I kidding, they’ll cut services for students and pay professors even less, bureaucrats will never willingly surrender power.

It’s not fast, but there’s a saying, if an egg is cracked from within, it becomes new life, if it cracks from without, it becomes a meal. I hope this helps the people progress towards a better more equitable society, but it may be a drop in the ocean, and it’ll take a lot more drops to raise the level of the sea.

It was a transparent effort to charge them with anything/something heavy and scary just to get them off the street and into the legal system, sapping their time and energy.
Bartsbigbugbag@lemmy.mlto World News@lemmy.ml•Chinese app RedNote gains millions of US users this week as 'TikTok refugees' joined ahead of ban — Reuters4·6 months agoYes indeed, the protests were peaceful. The violence against the protests by police and Zionists wasn’t though. In my own state, hundreds of protestors were arrested and charged with felony RICO law violations for soliciting donations to maintain the protest.
Bartsbigbugbag@lemmy.mlto World News@lemmy.ml•Chinese app RedNote gains millions of US users this week as 'TikTok refugees' joined ahead of ban — Reuters41·6 months agoLmao. Sure there was. I’m sure you’re getting that data from a non biased source not aligned with American interests, right? There’s more than 3,800 child laborers in my state alone. In fact, they’re legally working much of the time. Many states have lowered the legal working age, and constant reports come out about children working in horrific conditions doing dangerous work such as slaughterhouses.
Bartsbigbugbag@lemmy.mlto World News@lemmy.ml•Chinese app RedNote gains millions of US users this week as 'TikTok refugees' joined ahead of ban — Reuters41·6 months agoThen let’s talk about the brutal assault and suppression of the pro Palestinian protests last summer. On public property, assaulted by agents of the state, hundreds arrested and charged with felonies for speaking their mind, threatened constantly by public officials, laws made to criminalize criticism of the client state of Israel. Or the hundreds of journalists, veterans, and protestors assaulted for daring to speak out against the current regime during press conferences and rallies. Just today, multiple journalists were assaulted during a press conference with Blinken.

Bartsbigbugbag@lemmy.mlto World News@lemmy.ml•Chinese app RedNote gains millions of US users this week as 'TikTok refugees' joined ahead of ban — Reuters31·6 months agoRepression of hate speech is objectively a good thing. “Free speech” in our society is a dog whistle for allowing far right to spread conspiracy and lies without any repercussions. Western media heavily suppresses speech that cuts against their interests. Say “free luigi” on Facebook or instagram and see what happens. Say “free Palestine” on instagram and see what happens. Yet, literal fascists are allowed to (and even further spread by people like musk) to spread antisemitic conspiracies and objectively false and misleading pseudoscience without issue. Hundreds of left leaning journalists were banned on X in one day, for nothing more than being ideologically opposite to Elon Musk.
Put simply, the illusion of “freedom of speech” in the west is just that, an illusion. China does not suppress the majority of speech, they just don’t allow ideologues to sew conflict and falsehoods.

Israel is recognized for using imprisonment as a form of hostage taking, holding thousands of Palestinians with no charges or trial for up to months at a time, as young as 8 years old. This is more of the same behavior for them. They were not in Israel until dragged there at gunpoint, they were in international waters, btw.
